Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, IA has been selected by Disney to be among a select group of schools to pilot Newsies before it is released into general licensing....
Based on true events, Newsies tells the captivating story of a band of underdogs who become unlikely heroes when they stand up to the most powerful men in New York. It’s a rousing tale about fighting for what’s right... and staying true to who you are.
Newsies features a Tony Award®-winning score with music by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman, and a book by four-time Tony® Award winner Harvey Fierstein. The show received 23 major theatrical nominations – including eight Tony Award® nods – and won Tony®, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Score and Choreography in 2012.
“We’re honored to have been selected to share this powerful and inspiring musical with our community,” said Kyle Woollums, head drama director at Washington High School. “This opportunity to collaborate with Disney and Music Theatre International provides our students and faculty with a unique opportunity to interpret new and challenging material while helping other schools that produce the show in the future.”
Washington High School Drama will document its rehearsal process from auditions to performance to help Disney create a production handbook that will be distributed to other schools that license the show. The department will also work with the Disney creative team to make potential changes to the show during the rehearsal process.
Auditions and rehearsals will begin after summer break and the show will be performed on November 9, 10, and 11, 2017 in the Washington High School auditorium. Tickets will go on sale in September.
